SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a bad name for it, but it basically means the art of getting your website ranked higher in the search engines, with the overall goal of getting more traffic to your site.
SEO is a collection of things that can be done. Over the years it’s meant many different things and many people (black hat SEOs) have tried to game the system and “trick” Google into thinking their site should be ranked higher. This included lots of spammy stuff like keyword stuff the META keyword tag or getting thousands of links from crappy sites.
Nowadays, Google has gotten much better at determing which sites should be listed high in their thier results. The spammers still try to crack the code, but the GOOD SEOs live by the rules that Google has laid out.
That includes many things, for one a site that is well built and highly accessible to the search engines. There are off-site factors as well such as your link profile – how many sites link to you and what quality they are. And last but certainly not least, GREAT CONTENT.
Great content is perhaps the single biggest factor in the way your site performs in the search rankings. If your site is a trusted authority on a subject, then there’s no doubt that Google (and Bing and Yahoo) will reward you with great search rankings.
Great content is also content that is highly shareable and linkable, therefore leading to better social signals and backlinks. All part of a great SEO strategy.
